One Halloween Night
Now Playing: One Halloween Night
Topic: Halloween 1959
One Halloween night so cold and crisp,
I looked through the trees and through heavy mist

and there in the sky where the moon shone bright
I saw a witch flash through the night.

From what I could see that witch had ten knees
and upon those knees sat a golden key.

She took from her cloak a little black box
and upon that box sat a little red fox,

and when she opened it this I've told
that out came ghosts and goblins and all sorts of things
that scare little children on Halloween.

(hulitoons - 1959)

I wrote this in 7th grade.  It was a difficult time because I lived in Seoul, Korea, and was not an exceptional student.  But Halloween was also one of my favored days and I coveted that night greatly.  Still, writing a poem was new to me and I was very sure I could not do it so I wrote and edited it in my mind, delivering each line over and over again before adding the next.  I had repeated it so many times that when I finally wrote it to paper, it was in its final form.  Over the years this one piece, so ingrained in the files of my brain, has been pulled out to silent song many times.  I am only just now once again putting it in print.  It is not exceptional, but it surely is a flavored candy that has become part of my own gnarled bark!
